One- and two-character domains from Luxembourg
Award procedure:
In the 4th. quarter of 2020, the long-awaited allocation of the one and two-digit domains of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg began. The allocation was coordinated by the organisation responsible for internet addresses at national level, DNS Luxembourg.
The allocation of the domains was divided into several phases. First of all, trademark owners were given the opportunity to preferentially apply for domains that were related to the trademark they had registered. To apply for the domain, the interested party had to invest a minimum amount of 700 €. If there were several applicants, the domain name was auctioned among them.
Auctions:
In phase two, all other available domains were auctioned off under the auspices of DNS Luxembourg. Anyone who registered before the auction began and logged into DNS (Domain Name System) Luxembourg with the necessary access data could participate in the auction.
As expected, the demand was extraordinarily high. Single-digit domains from A to Z were consistently auctioned for four-digit amounts. Even for numbers, interested parties had to submit high bids to win the bid.
Availability:
Less than 4,000 domains were available during the allocation. However, the number of pure two-digit letter domains without special characters was limited to only 676 combinations. Therefore, it was not surprising that the auctions attracted numerous investors in addition to companies and private individuals.
Starting from a minimum bid of 100 €, interested parties could enter the auction to participate in the bidding. Those who were lucky could acquire their desired domain at a bargain price. But especially for common abbreviations and combinations, interested parties had to dig deeper into their pockets. Thus, it was not uncommon to have to invest four-digit amounts not only for single-digit domains, but also a large number of two-digit terms were auctioned off at a unit price of several thousand euros.
Acquisition:
For many interested parties, however, the awarding of the domains came as something of a surprise. Also due to the Covid 19 pandemic, which dominated the daily news during the issue period, many people who had made a note of their desired combination missed the auction date and did not attend. Nevertheless, the demand was enormous. As expected, all one- and two-digit domains, apart from a few special characters, were allocated after a short time.
A large part is already in the hands of investors and registrars. Interested parties who were not able to acquire the domain they wanted in the auction can now purchase it on the free domain market, subject to availability.
